You know when you mention helping out one day....this one turned out to be a big one - mixed-age groups of 11 children for half an hour slots from 9 to 3pm.
I ended up running a session looking e types of bugs and birds we want to help and have the kids build bird boxes and a bug house from a pallet, bamboo sticks and rolled-up paper.
The children got to use hammer and nails, a glue gun and drill and did a lovely job painting it. We built the Bug Hotel and placed it in a sheltered south-facing aspect among the plants. It’s useful but not too big or ugly looking I think. We also looked at hedgehog homes and built a couple of bird boxes
My gazeebo came in handy as a temporary classroom.
Great fun and very worthwhile - but I was shell-shocked afterwards. I don't know how teachers do it.
