Solid Oak Greenhouse!

27/3/2015

This is my most common sized greenhouse - 5m long by 3.5m wide with porch and cold frames but this time there is ONE BIG DIFFERENCE - this one is going to be built in SOLID OAK.

I can’t over-emphasise how different this makes this build - the weight and quality of oak, the ever-lasting endurance of this material, it’s strength....

It will be nestled among good company here - all the other buildings are made from oak as well.
There’s not much to show for how different this one is going to look at the moment - just the oak wall plates which I have pegged with oak dowels - but I am very excited to see this greenhouse finished and to know that this structure could potentially be here for hundreds of years.

Back to Tunbridge Wells

It’s quite a confined space. This greenhouse could only get to 2.3m wide - and it’s closed in by buildings and trees on all sides - but it sure sticks up for itself rising up like a spire among them all. It’s great being inside it. If the roof pitch was low you’d feel confined - if it was even normal you would look out horizontally around you but here there isn’t much of a view - here, with all that roof you can’t help gazing up at the framed expanse of sky above you. It wasn’t my idea to go with sure a sharp pitch - Graham pushed me to draw it that way - but he was right. In this spot it really works.

Oh, and I almost forgot, you can grow things in there too!

Nice to have a greenhouse where you can just enjoy it for what it is...
Yes, back to Tunbridge Wells to build the steepest roof I've ever built - 55 degree pitch.

Auto-opening roof windows are necessary this time (but installed as standard).

The crested ridge have been hand-cut from mahogany - so no-one ever has to think about re-painting then in their life-time if they don't want to (although the ridge section can be unscrewed and removed quite easily if desired).

I re-used old clay tiles already on site for the brick pathway (laying them in a wet concrete/mortar mix and then brushing in kiln dried sand on my second visit).

The brick sided raised bed has the same foundation as the rest of the building and can be filled to the top with good compost.

Hello Robin

The weather has been very cold down here.  I have just wired a socket inside the greenhouse and the heater is on along with a propagator.   I have also finished the paving by the door and along the edge so it looks really good.   We have had comments about how good it looks - well done!

Kind regards
Graham
Next ones - back to Bristol, and I'm also halfway through building a solid OAK one with porch and cold frames which will only be pegged and jointed (not a single screw or nail in sight).
