Rotherfield....IN RAIN

Like Glastonbury festival without the fun!

4 days of heavy rain but what an incredible setting for this greenhouse.

This one is being sited on a slope so there was a lot of digging out and levelling off the foundations before I could do any bricklaying.

Thank goodness for the gazebo.  (Well, thank you Simon for letting me borrow it - I’ve ordered a big one of these to get me through the winter.  Never known rain like this week though).

...just look at that mud bath!

A bit dark now but you can see the base completed for this porch greenhouse, and the walls for the cold frames which will go on either side.

Back to the big boy - 28ft long

28ft by 8ft!  Or in “new money” that’s 8.5m by 2.5m wide.

In anyone’s language it’s huge.
So let’s be honest - without my good friend Simon’s help there is no way I was going to get that ridge section up, or those eave plates - thank you Simon for all your help and hard work.

From the base build section (see link above) we completed the greenhouse in the usual 3 days - arriving Wednesday and departing Friday lunchtime.

4 manual opening windows along each side.

2.5m wide may not sound very wide but there is plenty of space inside as this double width path shows - and lots of headroom.  The doors are 2m high - the standard door height you’ll find in your own home.

Look how far away that other door looks.

Remember all shelving and potting tray included - 8 auto roof windows - everything you see actually.

The whole greenhouses is constructed from substantial sections of timber - it feels very robust - and looks like it’s always been there.

Beautiful in Bristol

Hello John!

I’ve just completed a beautiful little greenhouse for John and Margaret - and he’s confessed that he actually reads this blog.  Thanks John.  It’s a good way on keeping on eye on my comings and goings.
Picture
An 8ft by12ft (2.5m x 3.7m) complete build greenhouse - includes everything you can see from foundations to finials.

John said “It feels a lot bigger inside.  I’ve had an 8 by 4 greenhouse before but feels much bigger”.

These greenhouses are much taller than you usually find so you never feel cramped inside - actually the headroom’s so generous it’s like a little church.

Market Harborough - and hot!

Setting out where the greenhouse is going to go.

You can just see the battens laid out on the ground marking out the footprint of the greenhouse so we can make sure it’s in exactly the right position before I start.
Picture
Unfortunately winter nights have arrived so I couldn’t get photos of the completed base with all the flags laid and the gravel surround as it was too dark by then.

What strange weather these past few days eh?  So hot!

Robin,
Thanks for all your hard work last week. I hope you had a cooler and more relaxing weekend.

I have had word from PG Tips that they are expecting a new delivery from China later this week and they should be able to replenish Market Harborough's entire stock of tea bags by the end of next week. Obviously the citizens of MH are upset that they won't be able to get a cuppa until this delivery arrives- given I used up the whole of the town's supply last week- but at least this should avert demonstrations on the streets.

looking forward to seeing you later in the month.
Tim

Tim – that’s fantastic – Jo and I are in stitches here my friend – got to get that on the website now!

Got that date for my return visit – it’s probably not as soon as you were expecting though….so I’ll build up the suspense a little with a list of all the places I’m going to first – so I’ve got to go to Bristol, then West Sussex, then Devon, then Shropshire and then Manchester and then to you ….on the 15th November! Sorry it’s not sooner but it can’t be all fun you know – I do have to do some work for a change as well.

Kind regards – and many many thanks for all those hundreds of cups of tea which really got me through all that heat (although I know you only every saw me sitting down!).

Robin.

A photo sent by Tim of Robin just sitting around again.....!

(I do work hard really - but these were hot days.....honest)
