Porch for home

Over the past few weekends I built a porch for my house - as a side project from building greenhouses in the week - but this project shares many similar aspects.  I can add a porch to my house as "permitted development".  I don't need to involve the council as long as it's less than 3sq metres in size and below 3m in height.  I'm building mine just below that.

On the next weekend I built the walls from concrete blocks, added the drip edge and corner beading (I screwed them into the blocks) and rendered both sides - one "scratch" coat in 3:1 sand cement mix and a final brushed-up coat in 4:1.

After that massive Caernarfon job recently, I wanted some natural accoya on my porch - knowing how nice the final finish of the wood is with a bit of oil, and also the guarantee that it will last 50 years with no maintenance.

I made the rafters and cross ties from normal, structural-grade tanalised timber though (to keep the costs down).

The doorstep is from a chunk of mahogany I had in stock.

(Ignore Pablo barking at pedestrians)

Finally, I slated with some decent Spanish slates my brother-in-law sold me at a knock down price and installed lead soakers and flashings as I went.  The leadwork took a lot longer than the slating.

I managed to get some end of line tiles cheaply for the floor too.

The ground is parched and the soil was sand this week as I built the base for a greenhouse on a sloping site.

I stepped the foundations and added an extra four courses at the lower end of the slope - buying an extra 120 engineering bricks in the morning to built the levels up.

I infilled with soil and reinforced the back wall with concrete and solid blocks below ground level on the inside.

I brought a compactor this week and laid Type 1 quarry waste to provide a very solid base for the pathway.  I'm really pleased with the finished look of this path and will want to do a lot more of this version in the future.

I'll return in a few weeks to add the accoya greenhouse to this base.

Back on the road again this week after all the recent van trouble and delighted to be back with Chris and Phao who were such great company.  Their dog Toby wasn't that sure and kept a vigilant eye on me throughout.

This greenhouse is a "Sarah" - 2.2m wide by 2.8m long.   Being around 2.8m high the interior is tall and roomy with plenty of height for growing plants and space for 2-tier shelving right along the rear.  Where space is limited this provides a lot of growing and potting up space without taking up much room.

The whole greenhouse is constructed from accoya which carries a 50 year guarantee.  I used mahogany for the crested ridge however as it needs a tougher wood for that position and cut.
Please take a look at Phao's site "A blog of two gardens" - sharing their gardening experiences, and it includes a post or two about this greenhouse.

I'm sure Phao's photos and write-up will be more informative and entertaining than my own!

Next week I'm on the south coast of England building a long greenhouse base for a "Jill" type (with some changes and additions).  The drive will be around 6 hours each way.  This will be a test for the repaired van, and yes, I'm nervous.
