I'll return just after Christmas with the greenhouse to complete this one....

I really enjoyed the challenges of designing and building this one - making best use of the space by completely filling it with greenhouse. Also, having the doorway in the only place it could really go - the front end - meant I had to move the ridge line to the front and alter the roof pitches. Even the walls were tricky - I had assumed the concrete slab was level (it wasn't) so the first job was to cut bricks along the first couple of courses to feather it level before I carried on with building the walls. There are 4 auto-opening roof windows and 4 tall side windows with black cast iron fittings throughout. The ridge is from mahogany (to make sure it's tough enough) painted with 4 coats of Profilan paint. I fitted a set of solid iron bar supports under the roof for the customer to support hanging baskets or tomatos from . The roof itself is very strong - made from 4x2 structural grade timber with noggins and horizontal supports and birds mouth jointed along the eave - ready in case we get heavy snow loads through the winter months. |
