Thank you to my sister Alana and my youngest son Rab for these plastercine models of myself and Pablo, and for their take on “the Green Bug”.

The put together a short stop-motion film about Pablo entitled “The Lonely Dog” - just for fun.

Steve wants his greenhouse tucked in a tight corner of the garden facing the house - BUT a thick concrete pad juts right into the middle of where the new greenhouse will go.
It’s going to be too much work/waste, and thereby cost, to dig it out and remove it.  The best solution was to continue the slab at the same level throughout the new structure.

This one’s going to be a bit different too.

Steve wants the porch of his greenhouse to be smaller than my usual ones - feeling that it’s more in keeping with the traditional designs and I totally agree (it’s just that it’s a bit harder to do!).
The porch extends out by only 2ft but it’s enough to open up the main space inside and give some room for tools and a coat rack as well (you have to have one of those!

So here goes...First, I dig out a trench 1ft deep and lay a wet slurry of concrete mix inside and then sink solid concrete blocks into that.  I set a course of engineering bricks in a strong mortar mix on top of that and let that go off overnight.

In the morning I covered the bare ground with terram weedblock sheeting and shovelled half a tonne of aggregate (sand/grit mix) to level off the interior onto which a very wet mortar mix was applied.  Finally I poured around 4inches thick of wet concrete mix into the interior, tamped it down, and levelled it off against the outer course of engineering bricks .
Simple eh!

I was really chuffed with that and had a nice cup of tea to celebrate.  And then another when I realised I’d better leave it to go off for a good few hours before laying more bricks.  I didn’t properly start laying bricks again until the next morning and it was already hard by then.

And here’s the finished base.

I copied a brick pattern in Steve’s conservatory (as requested) by laying engineering bricks on the corners and a 4-brick pattern in the walls.  A small dusting down of the bricks now and they’ll look great..
I won’t be back here for a few weeks now as Steve is going on holiday but I can get a head-start on a few other greenhouses that are on the books in the meantime.  There’s always plenty to do!Thanks for reading.

It worked!  There was only 1 week gap between my completing the base and returning to fit the timber structure and glass to complete the job.

It was a little stressful for the glass suppliers though and I had to go to Liverpool to collect what wasn’t quite ready.

In future, I think a 2 week gap is the way to go but doing one greenhouse at a time works, with quick completion and my total undivided attention on one job at a time.

Here’s the building site!  On the first day of the construction the place it piled with timber sections I’ve pre-built and painted off-site ready to fit together.  It often looks almost finished at this stage but there are another 3 days of fitting glass, sealing, filling and touching-up and generally making the whole building look smart and smooth to the touch.

A couple of interior photos.  I’m really pleased with the finish I’m getting inside - more akin to a conservatory or a room in your own home than a garden building.  Don’t make a mess now!

Next time...

I’ll be in Surrey for a similar size building but this time with patterns in the brickwork, a really small / short porch and loads of narrow glass panes
